NEMA 14-50 vs 14-30 vs 10-50: Which Range Outlet Is in Your Kitchen?

Short answer

14-50 is a 50-amp four-wire outlet; 14-30 is 30-amp four-wire; 10-50 is an older 50-amp three-wire type. The number before the dash is the configuration, the number after is the amperage. They are not interchangeable — the outlet must match the circuit and the range.

Range outlets look similar at a glance but aren't the same. Here's how to read the codes and why the differences matter.

What the numbers mean

In a NEMA code like 14-50, the first part identifies the configuration (including how many wires) and the second is the amp rating. So 14-50 and 14-30 share the four-wire family but differ in amperage, while 10-50 is an older three-wire design.

14-50 vs 14-30

Both are modern four-wire outlets with a separate ground. The difference is capacity: 14-50 for 50-amp circuits, 14-30 for 30-amp. You can't substitute one for the other — the outlet has to match the breaker and wire behind it and the range's cord.

10-50 and other legacy types

A 10-50 is an older three-wire, 50-amp receptacle from before the four-wire standard. If you have one, your new range's 4-prong cord won't fit. That's a 3-to-4-prong conversion situation — and never a reason to defeat the ground.

Why they're not interchangeable

Forcing a mismatched outlet — wrong amperage or wrong wiring configuration — is unsafe even if a plug physically fits. If your new range doesn't match your wall outlet, that's the signal to have an electrician confirm the circuit and install the correct receptacle. Our guide to telling 3-prong from 4-prong helps you start.

When to call a licensed electrician

If your range and outlet don't match, an electrician should confirm the circuit's rating and install the correct receptacle rather than you forcing a fit.
